Census
Reports
1790
– 1950
=================
UPDATED March 17,
2024
This
was not a hot spot for Putmans or Putnams until well into the late 19th
and beginning of the 20th Centuries. What we know as Washington DC
now was larger when it began as Virginia supplied a bunch of acres in 1801 that
were returned in 1846. It was still a Territory 1895. Georgetown became a part
in 1895 and it then became the District of Columbia that it is today.
DISTRICT
OF COLUMBIA 1790-1800-1810 CENSUS
There
were no Putnams or Putmans listed in any of these years. Actually not sure the
District as such existed then.
DISTRICT
OF COLUMBIA 1820 CENSUS
CALEB PUTNAM Georgetown, Washington DC
He's Caleb Putnam from Newburyport, Massachusetts and
you’ll read all about him in the Mississippi Section. The listing is
010110-00000. He was born October 1, 1793 and was a son of Caleb Putnam
and Hannah Russell of Newburyport, Massachusetts. He came to Georgetown about
1816 and will marry Margaret Murdock there October 17, 1820. They will be
moving to Tennessee in 1824 and be in Knox County in the 1830 census, then to
New Orleans and then to Smith County, Mississippi in the 1840s. He died in
Madison Parish, Louisiana in 1862, and Margaret died in New Orleans in July
1887. His brother James Russell Putnam is with him now. Be careful, Caleb might
have gone by the name Charles from time to time. See his 1850 entry for that
story. There is also a Charles Putnam in his mid 20s in St. Landry Parish
Louisiana now in 1820 listed as a manufacturer that might be Caleb, however
that seems unlikely. In any case, this line is This line is Caleb >
Caleb > Archelaus > Archelaus > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel
> John Putnam of Massachusetts.
DISTRICT
OF COLUMBIA 1830-1840-1850 CENSUS
There were no Putmans or Putnams listed here in these census reports. However, there is a marriage record of a George M. Putnam marrying Mary Ann Parker in Washington on June 6, 1856. George Melville Putnam is number 2563, a son of Elisha D. Putnam (1150) and Nancy Melville of Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. He was born there October 29, 1827. Now, best I can figure, is that Elisha either got a divorce from Nancy (who is single back in New Hampshire in both the 1850 and 1860 census), or just took off with two of his kids, this George and his brother William Francis Putnam (2564). Elisha will die on May 1, 1864 at the home of his son William. William, who married Malinda Thomas, will die here as well on April 30, 1868.
DISTRICT
OF COLUMBIA 1860 CENSUS
There were no Putnams or Putmans listed in this report. But I know that the above Elisha D. Putnam, William Francis Putnam and George Melville Putnam are all here.

DISTRICT
OF COLUMBIA 1950 CENSUS
In
the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the
sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family
Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves
have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and
records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s
side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was
available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the
computers then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham,
Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State
I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and
literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper
with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older
women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you
hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of
generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow!
Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to
get info you didn’t think was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks,
and got a hold of several who had info. Now just an e-mail can bring in a ton
of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct,
please let me know so I can help others.
